Make Do and Mend

I love Vogue, they are just so thrifty. Take for example this ingenious shoot from the November UK Vogue issue...yes times are hard so they show us how we can make, do and mend from everyday household supplies. Above is a dress crafted from nothing but cotton wool balls with shoes made from toilet rolls- a couture look for pennies! Well, not quite...the text proudly proclaims that this outfit cost a mere £120 to make.

I know that this is a frivolous bit of fun where someone witty got to be creative, but I had to laugh that the pages of Vogue are still showing me unrealistic purchases- I can't even afford loo roll shoes!!

It is a clever though. Here are some more shots from the editorial:

I think they should have made a dress out of recycled issues of the actual magazine but I suppose that would have cost a bomb too.
My sister made a fairytale princess dress out of pastel coloured sponge dishcloths for a fancy dress party when she was a kid, she spent all her pocket money on dishcloths for a month.
I think the general thrift message is good but it would have been nice if they'd concentrated more on recycling & real make-do-&-mend rather than just making fantasy garments out of unexpected materials for fun.
In my opinion it can only be a good thing to get people interested in channelling their own creative potential & encourage a resurgence of truly handmade/homemade garb...erm, maybe not for the designers that are paying vast amounts of money to be plugged in Vogue.

I noticed the prices on these outfits too.

I can guarantee that you that I probably haven't worn an outfit costing over £150 head to toe for the last 6 months, and I didn't need to make any of it out of cotton wool balls.

Still, the pictures are cool.

Oh, I wish I had that issue. It sure looks very interesting, though I have to say that the price is surprisingly high for something made out of household items.

Thats the reason I love the magazine. Creativity! Every year, we have a fashion gala show in our school, where students design their own clothes. And last year the theme was recycled clothes or something like that, basically people made dresses out of juice cartons, boxes, billa bags... anything you could think of. And the dresses were actually Reaaaally pretty, some even wearable, which is sort of hard to believe :)) There are some pictures on my blog I believe :))
I hope this is not considered some sort of spamming, but please people, come around and check out my blog :)) xx

Or what about the More Dash than Cash in the December edition? Basically, as long as you can find the shop on Oxford Street it doesn't matter that it's a 300 quid jacket...
